The term “safe sex” can bring two distinct things to mind. One is that you can have sex without fear of any diseases and the other is hopefully you won't end up pregnant. Safe sex has come a very long way since the 1970s when condoms and birth control really started hitting the mainstream. Before then, the worst diseases could usually be cured with a shot and a handful of pills. In the late 1970s however, HIV first started to rear its ugly head. This completely changed the dating game forever. Casual sex really died off in the mid 1980s and was replaced by caution. This is a good thing!
Now, in the year 2008, there are literally hundreds of products devoted to safe sex. Sure there are the tons of varieties of condoms but there are many more items you should consider as well. When it comes to preventing disease, you can't really beat a condom but for birth control, the options now are amazing. It used to be you could take the pill or get an IUD. That was pretty much all there was. Now, you can get a shot, choose from many different variety of pills that have various benefits, get an IUD, or even get an implant in your arm that releases birth control hormones. Not all areas will have all of these options but many do.
Everything you could need for safe sex is sold in most stores all across the country. Even gas stations usually have a good selection of condoms if that's all you need. You can't be too careful so if you have sex with anyone you don't trust 100%, you need to use condoms. Many nasty diseases like herpes and warts might not be noticeable and your partner might not know they have it. This won't matter much to you when you notice something odd in your pants one day. Just do the smart thing and be safe. Many of these diseases will negatively effect your reproductive abilities also so you don't want to be 10 years down the road trying to have a baby and find out it's not an option because you messed up long ago.
